Abstract

The problem in this study is the students can not master speaking skill well. That is because of the teacher does not give place to practice it. The purpose of this study was to improve students’ speaking skills in English subject. The subject of the research was Class VII SMP IT Darul ‘Ilmi Kandanghaur Indramayu with a total of 20 students. This type of research was classroom action research which was carried out collaboratively between teachers and class VII SMP IT Darul ‘Ilmi Kandanghaur Indramayu and the research was conducted in semester 2 of the 2022/2023 academic year in two cycles. Each cycle consists of 4 stages. Those are planning, action implementation, observation, reflection and evaluation. In this study using a qualitative descriptive analysis technique which is carried out through the application of the discussion method by observing, practicing and testing. Based on the result of the research that has been carried out, in the pre-cycle activities, there are only 40% students get satisfactory practice exam results, and students tend to be passive during the learning process. After learning improvements were held in cycle 1, the increase in the proportion of pre-cycle evaluation scores to cycle 1 was 20%. During cycle 2, 90% of students got satisfactory. It can be concluded that by using discussion method, it is beneficial to improve students’ speaking skills in English subject.
