Abstract

This research compares the code-mixing terms used in the Indonesian original short story “Bawuk” by Umar Kayam and its translation into English by Harry Aveling. The research objectives are to determine the translation procedures and the ideology used to translate the code-mixing terms in the short story from its Indonesian SL into its English TL. This research is descriptive-qualitative research that applies a purposive sampling technique. This research data are 96 code-mixing terms in words, phrases, or clauses. The data collection method used in this research is literature analysis. The results of this research analysis are: (1) The translation procedures that the translator dominantly uses are cultural equivalent (23,96%), literal translation (22,92%), and couplets: transference and notes/additions (14,58%). Meanwhile, ten translation procedures applied in translating this short story are couplets: equivalence/adaptation and transposition, couplets: transference and literal translation, couplets: transference and notes/additions, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, equivalence/adaptation, functional equivalent, literal translation, transference, and transposition; and (2) The translation ideology that dominantly applied by the translator is a foreignization ideology (54%).
